A 90 minute flight from Nairobi will take you to Manda Island adjacent to the ancient, sleepy swahili island of Lamu. On landing you will be met with warm island charm before boarding a speedboat for a twenty minute journey through a wide channel, fringed with mangroves to Kipungani.
On arrival you will find our idyllic beach hideaway, calm under gently swaying coconut palms, perched over a sandy bay. Kipungani is private, secluded and extremely low key.
Just 14 beach cottages or “grass villas” are well spaced along the beach and have been ingeniously positioned to ensure privacy. The walls and floor are made from local palm leaf mats called mikeka and the coconut thatched roof (makuti in Swahili) has been pitched high enough to make the most of the cool trade winds.
The ample bedroom has a king size bed draped with mosquito netting. The ocean facing verandah is a private lounging area furnished for comfort. Guests enjoy a variety of facilities and services in the bay among them being fresh water swimming pool with 24 hour open bar service, safety deposit facilities for guests’ valuables, gift shop with local handicraft.
Guests are also treated with visits to Lamu’s historic museum, mosques and markets, tours of local boat-building and mat-weaving industries, deep sea game fishing, waterskiing in Kipungani channel, swimming with friendly dolphins on the reefs of Kinyika and Manda Toto among others.
